Technology Saved the Day

“Chuck, I left my phone at Trout Creek Rec,” Erica said.

“We’ll get it back later,” Chuck replied evenly.

What could be more commonplace than accidentally leaving a cell phone behind and assuming it would be waiting for you? But for Erica, it wouldn't be that simple. What began as a minor oversight turned into a three-day sleuthing operation for our entire family.

It happened on the first day of our week-long stay at Erica and Chuck’s home in Truckee, where we were helping babysit. After picking young Roger up from school, we headed to the recreation center for a swim. Finding the main pool too cold, we moved to the hot tub, which had just emptied. A few minutes into our soak, a woman who appeared to be of Slavic descent approached us. She asked if she could leave her mother in the hot tub with us, apologizing that the older woman didn't speak a word of English. We warmly agreed to keep an eye on her. When the daughter returned a little later, we dried off and left.

It wasn't until we got home that Erica realized her phone was missing. She was certain she had left it on a small side table by the hot tub.

Since the center was closing soon, Chuck pulled out his laptop. Like a true techie, he logged into Google’s Find My Device to track the phone, expecting to see it located at Trout Creek. Instead, he paused.

“Erica, it’s not at Trout Creek,” he said. “It’s at a house about a mile down the road.”

Though puzzling, none of us immediately suspected theft. We simply wondered why whoever found it hadn't turned it in to the front desk. Driven by curiosity, Chuck narrowed the GPS location down to a specific street address, grabbed his keys, and set off to retrieve the phone and thank the finder. Simple enough—or so we thought.

When Chuck arrived, no one answered the door, so he left a note. Through the window, he could hear the phone ringing when he dialed it from his own line. He returned a few hours later to find lights on inside, but still, no one came to the door. Growing suspicious, he contacted the local police. An officer went by to check on the property and left a business card wedged near the lock.

Early the next morning, Chuck drove by again. The house was silent; both his note and the officer's card remained untouched. That evening, he returned with Roli. This time, they taped a larger, impossible-to-miss message to the garage door using reflective tape.

The following morning, our family set out for breakfast at a local diner. Since the rental house was on the way, Chuck made a quick detour. The note was still taped to the garage, but a neighbor mentioned that the house was a short-term rental and that a white car had pulled out of the driveway earlier that morning.

We continued on to the diner, only to find a hour-long wait. Just as we were deciding where else to go, Chuck’s phone rang. It was the renter. He had just read the note on the garage and said he would wait for us in the driveway.

Before heading over, Chuck swung by the house to grab his laptop. Checking the tracking site one last time, he gasped. “Holy cow—the phone was just moved to a different spot on the property!”

Realizing the situation had shifted, we called the police to update them before driving over to meet the renter.

When we pulled up, Erica got out to speak with a friendly-seeming man. He explained that he had just arrived from Las Vegas late the night before, though his family had been staying at the rental for a week. As Erica explained the situation, he grew defensive, insisting the phone couldn't possibly be in his house. He added that he made plenty of money and had no reason to steal a phone, noting that the home didn't even have working Wi-Fi or a functional smart thermostat yet.

From the driver's seat, Chuck checked his laptop, activated the phone’s remote alarm, and asked Roli to help him follow the sound. The two of them walked toward the backyard.

By then, the renter’s wife and young son had come outside to see what was happening. As Erica spoke with the wife, Chuck and Roli reappeared holding a clear plastic bag containing Erica's phone. They had found it buried beneath a layer of dry pine needles beside a large rock—located entirely by the loud, continuous ringing of the device's alert feature.

Seeing the bag, the young boy blurted out, “Grandma keeps plenty of plastic bags just like that!”

The woman’s face contorted in anguish. “She lied to me,” she sobbed, pulling Erica into an embrace while apologizing profusely. “I asked her if she took the phone, and she said no. She lied to me again!”

Her husband explained that they had recently petitioned for his mother-in-law to immigrate from Russia, and that she had been a constant source of strain. The wife quietly whispered to Erica that she was terrified of how her husband would react, as this was one incident too many. Tearful herself, Erica assured her that all she wanted was her phone back for her remote work. Listening to the exchange from the car, I found myself tearing up, too.

I couldn't help but feel the weight of what that family was carrying. Tensions can run high for immigrant families navigating unfamiliar surroundings, and the fear of trouble with the law—compounded by domestic friction—was palpable in the woman's desperate apologies. Beyond the conflict, there was a raw, human vulnerability in watching a family unravel over a foolish act.

As it turned out, the elderly woman from the hot tub had spotted Erica’s phone on the table as we walked away. She had taken it and brought it back to the rental without telling her daughter or grandson. What she hadn't anticipated was modern technology: a feature that allows a device to ring at maximum volume for five minutes, even when set to silent. In a panic, she had carried it into the yard and buried it, hoping to hide what she had done.

We decided not to press charges, choosing instead to leave the family to address the situation privately. Thanks to a simple location-tracking app, a lost phone was recovered—and a quiet backyard mystery was finally solved.
